Oiled Mottled Petrel

When Nancy & Gunther Golinia of the Wildlife Rehab Shelter received this bird, it had the birding community very excited. It is a Mottled Petrel which washed ashore all oiled, on Banks Island just south of Prince Rupert. It is the first one of its kind found on the shores of British Columbia! In fact, only 5 sightings of Mottled Petrels have ever been made here, with most of them about 200 miles or more off shore. The bird was shipped south to Burnaby, after being stabilized, but unfortunately the Petrel succumbed to the combined effects of stress and oiling. It was sent to the Royal BC Museum in Victoria and mounted for display.
